Boxpark and Chalk Architecture have been consulting with Brighton and Hove City Council for the past 2 years. We share the council’s vision to renovate Madeira Terrace and create a new destination for the seafront with a range of new leisure, retail, office and hotel uses as laid out in the Council Madeira Drive Regeneration framework document. We welcome the news that the council are reapplying for a new grant from the Heritage Lottery fund and are open to ideas from developers to help shape the future of the seafront.

As things currently stand, £460k of crowdfunding has been raised to redevelop Madeira Terrace, with the council estimating the cost of renovation to be £30m. Frustratingly, the council’s previous bid to raise £4.2m of funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund was rejected in June 2018, fuelling Boxpark’s desire to deliver the scheme using commercial partners.

Boxpark and Chalk fully support the council position that the current situation is not acceptable. Madeira Terraces have been dilapidated since 2012 and their regeneration is a priority for all, with the risk of further degradation of the area posing another West Pier scenario in which the Terraces would fall into a state beyond repair.

Boxpark and Chalk agree that the council should engage with all interested parties, including commercial parties, in an open and transparent manner to deliver a long term solution for Madeira Terrace. We look forward to continuing our discussions over the coming weeks and months and hope to work together to restore Madeira Terrace back to its former glory.
